December 2015 Sale Report

There was no stopping this sale, strong viewing, heavy online interest and bidding, together with a good company of buyers throughout the two day auction, resulted in a very high selling rate of around ninety per cent and a number of very interesting prices.

Ceramics got the sale off to a fine start with a somewhat damaged lot of Chinese ceramics being heavily contested between an English dealer and a Chinese buyer in the room.  The lot comprised of three pieces of late 18th century/early 19th century blue and white ware, two bowls and a vase, two of which were badly damaged and estimated at around £200.  The bidding started below that figure and hovered around the mid hundreds for a while before two contenders got to grips with each other and pushed the price higher and higher until the hammer eventually fell at £6,100.

Other ceramics included a pair of Meissen models of Count Bruhlís tailor and his wife at £800, three Meissen monkey musicians at  £600, while the best of the Worcester vases sold at £520.

A fine collection of Cornishware was included in the sale, including a number of named storage jars. The collection totalled £2,720 and this represents about  one third of the total collection, the balance to be sold in the rooms here on December 30th.

Amongst the glassware a Lalique Formose vase made £880, and amongst the jewellery a diamond ring weighing in at 2.08 carats set in platinum realised £2,200.

There was a good collection of clocks including a 19th century clock garniture in a blue porcelain case of lyre shape set with white paste stones representing diamonds which sold well at £3,600.

Amongst the furniture an antique run of drawers made £620 and a large butchers block £560.

We are delighted to announce an additional sale between Christmas and the New Year, some 400/500 lots of mainly probate entries will be sold on December 30th and on view on the 29th December between 10 am and 5 pm.  The catalogue will appear online around the 22nd December.

The sale will be presented in the Schoolroom.
